Italy strike

Airports strike Italy from Wednesday, Feb 5

What does this mean for your flight?

On Wednesday 5 February, there will be a strike at several airports in Italy. This will affect travellers flying to, from or within Italy. Baggage handlers will be on strike for 24 hours. Major airports such as Rome Fiumicino, Milan Linate and 15 other airports will be affected.

ITA Airways has already cancelled 25 flights as a result of the strike. Further cancellations may follow in the coming days. Passengers are therefore advised to check their flight information before leaving for the airport.

Has your flight been cancelled due to the strike? If so, the airline is obliged to rebook you or offer you a full refund on your ticket.

Exceptions to the Airport Strike in Italy

Under Italian law, certain flights are protected from strike action. Flights departing between 07:00 – 10:00 and 18:00 – 21:00 cannot be cancelled due to the strike. If you are flying during these hours, there is a good chance that your flight will operate as scheduled.

No right to compensation

To avoid any surprises at the airport, it is advisable to check the status of your flight well in advance. Compensation is generally paid by the airline, as it is responsible for cancellations and delays that are within its control.

However, strikes by airport staff are not within their control, so you are not entitled to compensation. What you are entitled to if your flight is cancelled is care. Think about food and drink and, if necessary, hotel accommodation.
