France strike update: Air traffic controllers suspend September 18 action

The planned strike by the main French air traffic controllers’ union SNCTA on September 18–19 has been suspended.

As EUclaim reported in this article, significant disruption was expected on these dates, but the union has now lifted its strike notice. With the appointment of new Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, there is currently no government counterpart available to negotiate with.

New France strike planned for October

Instead of walking out in September, SNCTA has announced a new three-day France strike from October 7 to 9. This escalation follows the union’s usual strategy of calling a single day of action before moving to longer stoppages.

Its demands include full salary adjustments in line with inflation for 2024 and reforms to the governance of the profession.

September 18: disruption still expected despite strike suspension

Even though the main strike has been suspended, passengers should still prepare for major travel disruption on September 18. Other aviation and transport unions, including those at Air France and in the rail sector, have confirmed they will continue their strike actions.

Smaller air traffic control unions may also join, though this has not yet been confirmed.

The French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) will release forecasts closer to the date, requiring airlines to cut flights. Travelers are strongly advised to follow updates from their airline, as cancellations and delays remain highly likely—especially on routes crossing French airspace.
